Adjournment

Waste and recycling management

Waste and recycling management

Trung LUU (Western Metropolitan) (18:07): (2850) My last adjournment for this year is for the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, regarding the ongoing illegal dumping along Boundary Road between Tarneit and Truganina and the uncertainty surrounding the responsibility of its management and clean-up. The action I seek is for the minister to urgently determine who is responsible for this section of Boundary Road between Tarneit and Truganina, ensure that the waste is removed and work with the relevant authority to prevent further dumping. I have been contacted by residents who have raised serious concerns about the illegal dumping along Boundary Road and the nearby access road. For months piles of household rubbish, building materials, waste and potentially hazardous material have been piling up along the roadside, creating an eyesore and a growing safety risk to residents, motorists and surrounding landowners. Residents report that the problem has escalated to a point where access is becoming a safety and health hazard. There is also concern that rubbish is being blown onto neighbouring farmland, affecting farming operations and creating additional clean-up costs for local landowners.

I am particularly concerned by one report that a potential hazard may have been dumped in the area, raising questions about environmental impacts and the possible contamination of nearby water sources. While residents have attempted to raise this issue with relevant authorities, local and state governments are playing ping-pong regarding who is actually responsible for managing the site. Too often under this Labor government responsibility is lacking. Disputes between different levels of government and land management are leaving community stuck in the middle, with the problem getting worse. Regardless of whether this land falls under state or local government or another authority, my constituents, the residents who pay their taxes, deserve a clear answer and prompt action. The current situation poses risks to public safety, the environment and local community, and cannot simply be allowed to continue because of uncertainty over jurisdiction. The community simply want the rubbish removed, the area made safe and responsibility clearly established so that future dumping can be addressed quickly and effectively. So I ask the minister: will the Carroll Labor government ensure the waste is removed without further delay, or is this government going to kick the rubbish down the stream of potholes along the road?
