Ryan BATCHELOR (Southern Metropolitan) (09:52): Victoria Police play a vital role in keeping our community safe, which is why the Carroll Labor government is giving them the resources they need to detect and deter more crime in more places more often. Last week, with the member for Bentleigh Nick Staikos, I visited Moorabbin police station, which is one of the first police stations across Melbourne to have police reservists deployed behind the front desk. While we were there, we saw the reservist who had taken over the front counter operations, allowing more uniformed officers, frontline officers, to get back out onto the streets where they are needed. These reservists and the investment in them will allow our stations to remain open longer without sacrificing the time that officers can spend on patrol. Fifty reservists have been deployed since July and another 150 are in training, and the government have just announced another 200 reservists in addition to that will be recruited. With 400 reservists available, more frontline officers will be able to undertake an additional 86,000 shifts. We are not stopping there. We are recruiting additional PSOs to support operations across Victoria at train stations and in shopping centres. Since April PSOs have been out staffing earlier shifts at stations right across Southern Metro, including at Moorabbin, where they are patrolling from 9 until the last train every day. They are also in our shopping centres for the first time with these new recruits, and Victoria Police has designed a statistics-based model of deploying reservists and PSOs where they are most needed to keep Victorians safe.
