Wendy LOVELL (Northern Victoria) (09:48): Today the world lost one of the greatest entertainers and philanthropists of our time, Dolly Parton. Dolly was not only an amazing singer and songwriter, she was a great philanthropist and touched the lives of millions of children through her Imagination Library, which is dedicated to inspiring a love of reading in children from birth to age five. Thirty-one years ago Dolly founded Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which has distributed more than 332 million free books to children under five since its inception, including more than 12 million in Australia. In 2013 I was the early childhood minister when the Imagination Library partnered with United Way Australia to extend the program to Australia. It was launched in Melbourne during Dolly’s February 2014 tour of Australia, and I was invited to the launch and gifted tickets and a backstage pass to her concert. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend either event due to the Hazelwood open-cut mine fire and my responsibilities as Minister for Housing. Not being able to attend will forever be one of my biggest regrets, but the needs of the state had to come first. In April 2020 Dolly donated more than US$1 million to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center to fund research to develop the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, and in March 2021 she received her own Moderna COVID vaccine.
