Constituency questions

Southern Metropolitan Region

David DAVIS

Southern Metropolitan Region

David DAVIS (Southern Metropolitan) (14:15): (2498) Today I want to raise a matter for the Minister for Planning. Just a week ago I held a large forum in Ashburton and Glen Iris. There were almost 150 people in attendance, people concerned about the state government’s planning approach, concerned about the decisions that the minister has made, with planning amendments that will see six and eight storeys as the discretionary height limit in Ashburton. These discretionary height limits are not worth the paper they are written on. They are discretionary, and we have seen already in the City of Boroondara, in Kew, that the minister has signed off height limits beyond the discretionary limits. The fear is high-density high-rise development that will not have council or community support is being foisted on the area. There is wild anger at the government’s arrogant and undemocratic approach, and I am asking the planning minister to review the decisions, to reverse the decisions to override and to bulldoze local communities and to provide a way forward that involves the community and the City of Boroondara.
