Bev McARTHUR (Western Victoria) (14:12): (2495) My question is for the Minister for Police. Pakington Street is Geelong’s best shopping precinct, yet desperate and disillusioned traders there now face repeated break-ins, theft, property damage and antisocial behaviour. In recent months businesses have suffered burglaries and substantial losses, with some targeted more than once. Traders have become so frustrated they are coordinating their own crime warnings and sharing CCTV footage. The City of Greater Geelong and mayor Stretch Kontelj have responded with a practical proposal. They have identified nine locations for CCTV cameras between Autumn Street and Church Street and estimate the entire project would cost approximately $50,000. CCTV would provide a visible deterrent, assist Victoria Police investigations and help restore confidence among traders, staff and shoppers. Will the minister commit the modest funding required to install these nine cameras and help make Pakington Street safer?
