Adjournment

Road maintenance

Evan MULHOLLAND

Adjournment

Ingrid STITT (Western Metropolitan – Minister for Government Services, Special Minister of State, Minister for Ageing, Minister for Mental Health, Minister for Multicultural and Multifaith Victoria) (18:42): I move:

That the house do now adjourn.

Road maintenance

Evan MULHOLLAND (Northern Metropolitan) (18:42): (2618) My adjournment is to the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, whoever that may be in the next week or so, and the action I seek is for the minister to urgently deal with the crisis on our roads regarding potholes. I recently had the opportunity to go up and spend some time in Wodonga with the fantastic Liberal candidate for Benambra Steve Martin, who is doing a fantastic job on behalf of his community. I could not help but notice, particularly on the Hume on the way up to Wodonga, the state of the potholes. There were literally signs on the side of the road warning people about potholes. They are not getting on and fixing the road and actually resurfacing the road so we can eliminate potholes, but erecting signs warning people about potholes. Then you go over onto the New South Wales side of the Hume, and suddenly you have got quite a smooth journey.

I have got to tell you, President, Victorians are so ashamed to be Victorian because of this government’s lack of investment in our roads. I heard too many stories from people at our listening post in Wodonga about their rims being destroyed and their suspension being broken because of incidents with potholes, and enough is enough. This government has treated regional Victorians and all Victorians with contempt. I have got to tell you, our plan to eliminate 1 million potholes and spend $5 billion fixing Victorian roads for good went down very well. It was received very, very well, because this government has failed them when it comes to potholes.

Sonja Terpstra interjected.

Evan MULHOLLAND: I know Ms Terpstra seems to think it is not an issue and would rather complain about 3AW. But those calls are real, and those people I spoke to in Wodonga had real stories. The same issues get raised with me in places like Wallan, in places like Craigieburn and even in places like Brunswick. Travelling across the state with Jess, I can tell you there is fury out there. So I seek the action of the minister to fix our roads.
