Renee HEATH (Eastern Victoria) (12:47): (2646) Boral’s proposed Montrose quarry expansion seeks to extend operations 30-plus years beyond current life expectancy and to increase its extraction area by approximately 12 hectares, significantly encroaching upon homes, schools, businesses, childcare and aged care facilities and the surrounding land users. The Minister for Planning determined that an environment effects statement, or EES, is required due to the significant environmental and community impact potential. Human health impacts, however, have not been identified within the minister’s statement of decision or reason for decision. Clare Fitzmaurice, the Liberal candidate for Monbulk, has worked very closely with local advocacy group Stop Montrose Quarry Expansion to put together a lower house parliamentary petition calling on the government to ensure that health is included in the scoping requirements. The question for the Minister for Planning is: why haven’t you listened to the community’s concerns and acted to ensure human health risks are considered?
