Constituency questions

Northern Victoria Region

Rikkie-Lee TYRRELL

Northern Victoria Region

Rikkie-Lee TYRRELL (Northern Victoria) (12:44): (2644) My constituency question today is for the Minister for Emergency Services, and my constituents ask: Minister, will you commit to replacing every firefighting appliance that has reached or exceeded its service of life to ensure the safety of both our career and volunteer firefighters? The minister has previously spoken on the importance of safety standards and the continued efforts to increase the safety standards for both our career and volunteer firefighters. He remarked that it is not just the firefighters’ safety that unions fight for, it is the community’s safety as well. Firefighters have spent years warning about ageing appliances, and we have just seen the summer bushfire inquiry recommend immediate funding for replacement trucks and a rolling replacement program. Far too often we see reports of yet another broken-down fire truck unable to respond to what could possibly be the worst day of someone’s life. Frustrated firefighters just want to do the work they signed up for and protect their communities. Minister, it is time to commit to replacing the ageing fleet of firefighting appliances to ensure the safety of those who protect us.

The PRESIDENT: That is within your region?
