Victorian Eagles kho kho club

Richard WELCH (North-Eastern Metropolitan) (09:52): On Saturday I joined the Victorian Eagles kho kho club at Billabong Park in Vermont South, with the candidate for Glen Waverley Jacky Sun. For anyone who does not know what kho kho is, it is one of India’s oldest team sports. There is no ball. There is a team of nine players on each side who run between posts – one chasing, one defending – in a game of exhilarating exhibitions of athleticism, dexterity and changes of direction. It is absolutely brilliant. The ground came about because committee members, led by club president Randeep Kaur, kept asking and kept turning up at Whitehorse council and they made space at their local baseball club, who accommodated them. That is how a new sport can take root when people work together in that way. What I took from the exhibition match was that players were all ages and all genders, but it was parents who had immigrated from India teaching their children who had been born in Australia a traditional game and carrying on their tradition in that way. It is not just about food and dance, it is also about the sports that you inherit. It was really wonderful; I got sunburnt. My congratulations to Randeep Kaur, the Victorian Eagles committee and volunteers and the families who turned out. I look forward to playing in the first competitive season this year.
