Sarah MANSFIELD (Western Victoria) (12:41): (2641) My constituency question is for the Minister for Environment. Coastal communities in the far south-west in places like Moyne and Glenelg shires are facing confronting impacts of the H5N1 bird flu, with growing numbers of sick, dying and dead bird species and now marine mammals washing up on beaches and beyond. These communities so far have received no assistance from the state government, and councils are really struggling to try and manage as best they can for these communities. Across the border, however, in South Australia, it is a different story, where they have deployed dedicated teams to undertake surveillance, humane euthanasia of suffering animals, carcass removal and pest control to limit viral vectors and scavenging risks. Minister, why is Victoria’s response to the wildlife impacts of H5N1 so inadequate, and will you commit to strengthening habitat intervention, as South Australia has done?
