Constituency questions

North-Eastern Metropolitan Region

Aiv PUGLIELLI

North-Eastern Metropolitan Region

Aiv PUGLIELLI (North-Eastern Metropolitan) (12:51): (2510) My question today is to the Minister for Environment. Kangaroos in the Nillumbik shire and right across my electorate are well loved by many out there in the community, and it was an important win for them that these local creatures finally have been excluded from the cruel commercial harvesting scheme following a strong community campaign. However, in this area kangaroos do still end up in areas where they should not be: they get too close to main roads, risking vehicle strike; they get landlocked by developments or fences; and there are certainly areas which are just not suitable for them to reside where we find them. Minister, there is a new ethical wildlife management tool called Cherrp, which has been used to gently move parrots to safe areas of sanctuary. The technology is relocating tens of thousands of corellas from an area of cropping that had incurred significant losses to a well-planned sanctuary location. There are plans for this trial to be used to assist kangaroos. Minister, will you meet with the project team to discuss state government support for this scheme?
