Japan trade

Japan trade

David LIMBRICK (South-Eastern Metropolitan) (10:04): To the Japanese, the crown melon is not merely a piece of fruit, it is a symbol of beauty, excellence and perfection. As a gift to Australia it also holds deeper significance. Earlier this year these melons passed Australia’s strict biosecurity protocols for trade. Japan is Australia’s second-largest trading partner, and our opening trade relationship stands in stark contrast to the United States, whose tariffs have harmed both Japan and Australia. Apparently this significance was lost on our Prime Minister. His embarrassing comments are now being reported widely in Japanese media and have undermined those of us who seek to strengthen our friendship with Japan. His words do not reflect the fondness that Australians have for the Japanese people. His foolishness is in serious danger of triggering an anti-Australian backlash, which could be a disaster for Australian farmers. Japanese diplomats may have let things slide, but the Japanese consumer may not. Prime Minister Albanese must immediately apologise to Prime Minister Takaichi and prove our friendship to the Japanese people.
