Constituency questions

Eastern Victoria Region

Tom McINTOSH

Eastern Victoria Region

Tom McINTOSH (Eastern Victoria) (12:59): (2617) My constituency question is for the Minister for Homelessness. Housing is central to quality of life, yet far too many people are sleeping rough across Victoria, especially on the Mornington Peninsula. We need to build more homes, maximise the efficient use of existing housing stock and increase frontline support services on the ground in local communities. Across the peninsula we have seen an incredible local effort, and I am proud to have worked alongside Southern Women’s Action Network, Fusion, women’s community shelters –

David Davis interjected.

The PRESIDENT: Order! Mr Davis! Can we reset the clock, please?

Tom McINTOSH: Yes. Just before I start, this is a serious matter about people sleeping rough. We have had a lot of people die on the peninsula. So can you just maybe pull your head in?

The PRESIDENT: Can we reset the clock. From the start, Mr McIntosh.

Tom McINTOSH: My constituency question is for the Minister for Homelessness. Housing is central to the quality of life, yet too many people are sleeping rough right across Victoria, especially on the Mornington Peninsula. We need to build more homes, maximise the efficient use of existing housing stock and increase frontline support services on the ground in local communities. Across the peninsula we have seen an incredible local effort, and I am proud to have worked alongside Southern Women’s Action Network, Fusion, Women’s Community Shelters, Southern Peninsula Community Support, Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, my colleague the member for Hastings Paul Mercurio, the YWCA, federal housing minister Clare O’Neil and special envoy Josh Burns. I am proud that this advocacy has been heard and that the Labor government is investing in building new supportive housing on the peninsula funded by the short stay levy and funding new targeted assertive outreach services for our region. Minister, how will this latest support be rolled out across the peninsula to ensure vulnerable community members receive immediate housing and support?
