Future Geelong Leadership Awards

Gayle TIERNEY (Western Victoria) (09:59): This morning I wish to acknowledge the Future Geelong Leadership Awards, presented by the Geelong Advertiser and the Committee for Geelong. It celebrates people helping to shape a stronger future for our region. This year Justin Giddings received not one but two honours: the City Shaper award and the evening’s highest accolade, the Frank Costa Leadership Award. I have known Justin for many years, from his leadership of Avalon Airport and the AMDA Foundation to his time as chair at the Gordon TAFE. Whatever hat he is wearing, Justin brings the same practical approach, quiet determination and commitment to Geelong. As CEO of Avalon Airport, he helped transform it into an economic and employment hub. At the Gordon TAFE he understood the power of TAFE to change lives and build the skilled workforce our region needs. Today he continues to champion Australian aviation, advanced manufacturing and career opportunities for young people. Justin’s contribution to Geelong has been substantial and lasting. I can think of few people more deserving of these awards. I also take this opportunity to congratulate other outstanding award winners Professor Peter Vuillermin, Tina Johnston, Gus Verwoert, Lee Troop, Ashleigh Wall and Hanlon on their well-deserved awards. They make this region a powerful region and a stronger region because they know what we need, and we work together to improve the reputation and the longevity of the Geelong region.
