Ministers statements: digital services

Enver ERDOGAN (Northern Metropolitan – Minister for Finance, Minister for Casino, Gaming and Liquor Regulation, Minister for Government Services) (12:34): I rise to update the house on the data and digital ministers meeting last week with Commonwealth, state and territory ministers. The data and digital ministers meeting is an important forum for governments to work together on the opportunities and challenges presented by data, technology and digital transformation. Technology is changing how Australians live, work and interact with government. This makes it increasingly important for all of us to work together, aligning approaches, sharing expertise and addressing issues that extend beyond state jurisdictional borders. The forum provides an important opportunity to progress national reform, including improving the interoperability of data and digital systems, strengthening digital capability and public trust, advancing digital identity and making it easier for people to navigate government during key life events.

At last week’s meeting data sharing was a particular focus, including the commencement of the five-year review of the national Intergovernmental Agreement on Data Sharing. Ministers also considered how public sector data can be made more accessible and useful while maintaining the strong privacy, security and ethical safeguards that Australians rightfully expect. Digital inclusion was another important focus, including new principles to support the secure and sustainable reuse of government ICT devices, as well as work to improve connectivity for remote First Nations communities. These discussions highlight the value of a coordinated approach to digital reform, sharing what works, tackling common challenges and developing practical solutions that can deliver better outcomes for all Australians. By working collectively, governments can ensure digital reform is coordinated, practical and focused on delivering tangible benefits for Australians. Victoria will continue to play an active role in this national work because contributing our experience and expertise will ensure Victorians can benefit from the digital reforms being progressed across our country.
