 Ann-Marie HERMANS (South-Eastern Metropolitan) (14:08): (2475) My question is to the Minister for Victim Support. Recently I was contacted by two constituents who were victims of a terrifying home invasion involving weapons while living in public housing. One of the victims suffered knife wounds to his hand and chest which caused long-term damage. My constituents are horrified by the lack of justice in the legal system. They say, and I quote, ‘Offenders appear to be given a slap on the wrist for serious crimes committed.’ One of the offenders only served a three-month detention, and the other offender is not serving time, but rather doing an intensive program. To make matters worse, my constituents are not kept informed on a timely basis of the decisions of the court. For people to understand the rule of law and the seriousness of a weapon assault there need to be consequences for their actions. Minister, why can’t your Labor government deliver justice for victims of crime?
