Constituency questions

Northern Victoria Region

Rikkie-Lee TYRRELL

Northern Victoria Region

Rikkie-Lee TYRRELL (Northern Victoria) (12:49): (2563) My constituency question is for the Minister for Education, and my constituents ask: will the minister attend the community meeting on 15 September to discuss the urgent need for a public high school in Kilmore? The Kilmore community has been in need of its own public high school for decades. Kilmore is the largest town in Victoria without a high school. Currently there are more than 1200 secondary school aged children living locally, needing to travel to Wallan, Broadford and further each day for school. Currently the only option for a secondary school in town is Assumption College, which charges upwards of $10,000 a year. This is unacceptable. The community is asking for the same opportunities as everyone else – a public high school within their town. It is not an unreasonable ask. There are claims from students who suffer from anxiety and sensory issues that they cannot attend school because of the impacts of long travel each day. Kilmore is growing. The infrastructure needs to keep up. Locals have had enough. Why isn’t their kids’ education seen as important by this government? Minister, my constituents – (Time expired)
