Parliament in Auslan resources launched

New resources have been launched to help make Parliament more accessible for and inclusive of people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
A joint initiative of Deaf Victoria and Parliament of Victoria, the Parliament in Auslan project includes a series of education reels and a webpage that provides a hub for parliamentary information and news in Auslan.
Parliament’s Presiding Officers, deaf community members, parliamentarians and parliamentary staff attended the launch at Parliament House.
‘This project represents something far greater than just a new set of videos. It’s the culmination of many years of collaboration and relationship building between Parliament and members of the deaf community,’ said Legislative Assembly Speaker Maree Edwards.
‘When people have access to information, in a language and format that’s meaningful to them, they’re better equipped to participate, to have a voice, and to shape the democracy we all share. Accessibility is not just about removing barriers. It’s about creating genuine pathways to participation.’
The educational reels feature deaf community member Catherine Miller, who explains various aspects of how Parliament works. They were produced with the support of Parliament’s community engagement and broadcast teams.
‘It's been a wonderful partnership with the Parliament of Victoria since 2017,’ said General Manager of Deaf Victoria, Philip Waters.
‘It was so exciting to see the growth of different ideas and initiatives.’
