Legistrative Council E-Petitions

E-petition Number
Reduce stringent COVID-19 limitations on Victorians
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that it is not fair or reasonable to expect that Victorians want to or are prepared to go to extraordinary lengths for their physical safety. Primarily because where they gain physical safety, they lose many other important life factors.

There are a significant number of Victorians who consider that the Government’s position of enforced safety over freedom or enforced safety over independence is unreasonable.

The direct and indirect impacts of increased stringency, such as loneliness, loss of independence, depression, difficulties in education and financial strain, tend to outweigh increased physical safety and improved hospital load.

The Government should recognise that freedom and mental well-being are considerably more important than physical safety and that a significant number of Victorians would be prepared to accept some increase in risk of transmission and infection for increased freedom and independence that would result in an increase in well-being.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to reduce the stringency of limitations on the freedom and movement of Victorians and consider whether the current impacts of these restrictions are having a greater negative impact on Victorians than an increased rate of COVID-19 transmission.
