Legistrative Council E-Petitions

E-petition Number
Reopen one punch attack investigation
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that Victoria Police have failed to adequately investigate a violent one punch attack on 10 September 2018 which caused grievous bodily harm to the victim.

The failure of Victoria Police to adequately investigate the incident was reported to the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC). IBAC determined that the matter be referred to the Chief Commission of Police. The victim has not heard from the Chief Commission of Police. The only contact made was by an officer of the Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU) and directly after that contact, evidence which may be pertinent to the attack was removed by a person/s of interest. The next day that officer stated that their office door “may have been open” during a phone conversation with the victim, after they had stated this was to be a “clear desk investigation”. Further, another CIU officer whom the first one stated was to be the lead investigator, denied knowing anything about the case when the victim finally managed to contact the officer via telephone.

This extremely violent attack and lack of correct investigation appears as it were to be sanctioned by the police, manifestly failing in their public duty.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Minister for Police and Emergency Services to direct the Chief Commission of Victoria Police to reopen the investigation into the one punch attack that occurred at Latrobe Regional Hospital on 10 September 2018.
