Legistrative Council E-Petitions

E-petition Number
Improve public transport to reduce climate change impacts
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that energy consumed for transportation accounts for approximately 30 per cent of our total energy consumption. Non-renewable, fossil-fuel sources like oil, coal and gas provide the vast majority of this energy. Several billion dollars is currently leaking out of the Australian economy in order to import fuels in this clearly un-sustainable fashion.

In terms of our energy use, rail transport accounts for a mere five per cent compared to the whopping 70 per cent consumed for road-based transport. Increasing capacity and utilization of our rail infrastructure can substantially reduce our climate change impact, reduce our overall consumption of energy, support the Australian economy and prepare us for future population growth.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to substantially increase spending on rail based public transport infrastructure, increase frequency and availability of public transport services during peak hours, disincentivise the use of fossil-fuels, curtail spending on non-essential road infrastructure and substantially subsidise public transport costs to offer a clear financial incentive to use these services.
