Legistrative Council E-Petitions

E-petition Number
Earlier police intervention in stalking and domestic violence cases
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council the need for an inquiry into matters regarding police intervention in cases of domestic violence and stalking.

Recent events saw a 23-year-old woman’s life cut short by her stalker. She had requested police help. However, they were unable to protect her. She was not the first, nor will she be the last to fall victim to a failing society designed to protect women.

There must be stricter measures in place for Victoria Police to allow them to intervene further in situations of domestic violence and stalking. It is not enough to deny assistance because the perpetrator has yet to hurt a potential victim. It has proven to be detrimental to the health, safety, and well-being of victims and their families. Victims should not have to wait until it is too late for police to intervene.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to conduct an inquiry into police intervention in stalking and domestic violence cases and consider earlier and stricter intervention prior to a crime being committed to ensure that our women are safe, before it is too late.
