Joint sitting appoints new Council member

 Melina Bath

Melina Bath has been appointed a member of the Legislative Council at a joint sitting of the Victorian Parliament.

The vacancy was created when Danny O'Brien resigned his Legislative Council seat representing Eastern Victoria to contest the by-election for the Legislative Assembly seat of Gippsland South, which he won.

Ms Bath is a member of The Nationals, the party previously represented in the Legislative Council by Mr O’Brien.

Under Victoria’s Constitution Act 1975, if a casual vacancy occurs in the Legislative Council and the member vacating the seat was elected as a member of a political party, then the joint sitting must select a person nominated by that political party.

Ms Bath was sworn in as a member of the Legislative Council today (16 April 2015).
