The petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that there is a need to review the current penalty enforced by traffic infringement Code 1929 under the Road Safety (General) Regulations 2019.

Current regulations should be reviewed and changed from an automatic suspension of three months for a Victorian held vehicle licence to a three demerit point penalty. The existing financial penalty should be retained when the offence occurs within a school zone that is designated within a three lane road (with an accompanying service road). This will ensure that only drivers who intentionally exceed the state road limits are punished, as opposed to drivers who make a legitimate mistake.

The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to review and change the severity of the penalty imposed by traffic infringement Code 1929 under the Road Safety (General) Regulations 2019.
