Legistrative Council E-Petitions

E-petition Number
2021 duck hunting season
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council the failures of the Game Management Authority (GMA) in announcing the 2021 duck hunting season.

After an unnecessary delay, the GMA shockingly announced a heavily modified 2021 duck hunting season, with the following conditions —
(1) reduced season from 12 weeks to just 20 days;
(2) mid-week opening, starting on a Wednesday instead of a Saturday;
(3) late start time of 8.00 a.m. for the first five days of the season; and
(4) daily bag limit reduced from ten to two birds per day.

The GMA was provided evidence and data to support a full and unmodified hunting season by the Victorian Duck Hunters Association, Field and Game Australia, Sporting Shooters Association of Australia and the Shooting Sports Council of Victoria. The South Australian Government has announced a four-bird bag limit and a 14-week season. Despite this, and the extremely wet and favourable conditions, the GMA has gone against the recommendations of these hunting bodies and announced an extremely modified and unjustified duck hunting season for reasons unknown.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to establish an inquiry into the Game Management Authority and their handling of the 2021 duck season, announce a full 2021 season with full bag limits and communicate directly with hunting organisations to better understand the issues duck hunters face.
