In reply to Mr BARTON (Eastern Metropolitan) (30 October 2019)
Mr JENNINGS (South Eastern Metropolitan—Leader of the Government, Special Minister of State, Minister for Priority Precincts, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs):
The then Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources, and the independent Chair of the Fairness Fund, consistently advised payment recipients to seek their own tax advice because the taxation of payments may vary depending on individual circumstances. The Department engaged with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), provided all relevant information and responded to questions from officials at the ATO so that the ATO could ascertain how the Commonwealth law applied to payments from the Fairness Fund.
