Legistrative Council E-Petitions

E-petition Number
Allow the use of private e-scooters
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that private e-scooters reduce travel time as they can replace walking or a short car trip and therefore should be allowed on the road.

People tend to take care of their own e-scooters better than those that are casually rented. E-scooters provide better access to public transport by reducing first and last mile transport problems. They reduce urban congestion and lower environmental impacts. Each e-scooter ride is one less car on the road.

Very little electricity is needed to charge an e-scooter, while a car causes much more pollution. There are significantly lower costs to run an e-scooter and this can benefit lower socio economic groups who may not be able to afford to buy and maintain a car.

The rate of accidents that cause death or significant injury are considerably lower with e-scooters. They are also less likely to create as much impact when those accidents occur as they cause noticeably less harm than most other forms of transportation. People talk about the fear of being hit by an e scooter, but the reality is that cars and bicycles cause much greater injury.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to allow the use of private e-scooters on the road.
