End the ban on elective surgery
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that the current ban on elective surgery must be lifted immediately.

Patients currently awaiting elective surgery are suffering immensely with unbearable pain, discomfort, and anguish in a physical, emotional and mental way. Whilst the surgeries are categorised as 'elective', the term 'elective' is inaccurate. Many such surgeries are necessary to address life threatening conditions and/or conditions that prevent patients from performing day-to-day duties and living a normal life.

We note that several surgeons have reported that many private hospitals are currently sitting idle, with staff and resources available and ready to continue surgeries. We also note that the South Australian Government has recently announced a staged return of elective surgeries after many procedures were postponed to ease the pressure on the health system. Finally, Victoria's Chief Health Officer has confirmed his belief that COVID-19 hospitalisations would not climb to previous predictions of 2,500.

To continue the ban on elective surgeries is therefore unreasonable and unjustified. The health of Victorian patients is deteriorating and this must be addressed immediately.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to immediately end the ban on elective surgery as a matter of urgency.
