Legistrative Council E-Petitions

E-petition Number
Intergovernmental Declaration on Children, Youth and Climate Action
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that in 2019, 12 countries signed the Intergovernmental Declaration on Children, Youth and Climate Action. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), YOUNGO (Youth Constituency of the UNFCCC) and the Children’s Environmental Rights Initiative are the joint custodians of the Declaration. To date, Australia has not signed the Declaration.

As the Earth goes into a climate emergency, we embark on the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration to resuscitate her. Therefore, it is ever more critical and urgent for the first generations who feels the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it, to be united to avoid intragenerational confrontations.

Humans have squandered the last 30 years and unless we want to be divided and conquered by the climate crisis, there is no time for infighting between younger and older members of this last generation who can ensure the survival of future generations.

It is imperative that all levels of government recognise and mobilise the enormous capacity of children and youth to be mighty agents of change. This can be achieved by the Government consistently considering the specific needs, rights, and perspectives of children and youth in all of its climate actions.

The Declaration represents an opportunity for Australia to commit to the adoption of a comprehensive framework to rectify the widespread omission of children and youth from climate policies across different tiers of government.

Let us put our Earth where our mouth is.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council introduce, debate and vote on a motion urging the Federal Government to sign the Intergovernmental Declaration on Children, Youth and Climate Action, by no later than 31 December 2021.
