Legistrative Council E-Petitions

E-petition Number
Community collaboration for planning Kyneton public space
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that the recent Government allocation of $12 million dollars to build a new home for art exhibitions, as well as public spaces at the old Kyneton Primary School, did not detail any specific role or responsibility in the project for our local community.

In 2018, the local community warmly welcomed and strongly represented the decision by the Andrews Government for the site to continue as a public space. Under the Co-operatives National Law Application Act 2013, the community established Kyneton and District Town Co-op Ltd, specifically to co-ordinate the wide-range of interest and ideas for future development and management of the site.

The announcement of an unidentified organisation to develop the site with $12 million rejects community interests and ignores the contributions the community can make to the success of the project. The failure of the current Labor Government to meaningfully involve local residents in the design and responsibility for this precinct has been disappointing.

Membership of the Co-op is free and open to all citizens and organisations. The local community has demonstrated through both individual and organisational membership of the Co-Op, a strong desire and commitment to take a direct role and responsibility for the future development and management of the old school site. If a town square in the heart of Kyneton is to feel like home for residents, the community needs to take some grass roots ownership of the space and infrastructure.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government, as a matter of urgency, to collaborate with our local community through the Kyneton and District Town Square Co-Op Ltd., in the design and functioning of the school site, its school buildings and the evolving Town Square vision to deliver direct community engagement, broad community use, and lasting community benefit.
