Legistrative Council E-Petitions

E-petition Number
Ban Factory Farms
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council the need to ban factory farms which will remove the risk of COVID-19 type zoonotic diseases from becoming a global pandemic again.

An example of a factory farm would be the excruciating gas chambers used in pig slaughterhouses. Contrary to what we have been told, pigs do not just ‘fall asleep’. Footage obtained by activists show pigs entering the gas chambers, thrashing around in ever-increasing panic and agony as their lungs are seared from the inside out, desperate to escape, many who inadvertently pull their own legs off, fighting for their lives. A practice which brings so much pain and suffering should not be legal.

Clean lab-based meats have become a new technology that is capable of bringing trillions of dollars into Australia, using 99 per cent less water than factory farming, 93 per cent less land use, 46 per cent less power and 90 per cent fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

We must do something now to protect our earth and animals. Farmers have broken many rules regulating the housing of farm animals. The cruel factory farm practices must be replaced with practices that produce clean meat or lab-based meat.

Otherwise our children and future generations of Australia will be at risk. We must make change now before it is too late!
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to introduce and pass legislation to allow for a state-wide plebiscite on the issue of factory farming, so Victorians can vote against factory farming and avoid another zoonotic disease outbreak.
