Legistrative Council E-Petitions

E-petition Number
Transport solutions in the North East
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that the North East Link toll road is not the path to transport solutions. Another massive toll road through the middle of Melbourne will cause more traffic, create more air and noise pollution, destroy the local environment, with more than 2,600 trees planned to be cut down, and lock us into more transport emissions, contributing to the climate crisis.

The bushfires that have ravaged large parts of Australia have dramatically demonstrated that we must stop investing in projects like freeways that add to emissions. We must invest in fast, efficient public transport, like rail options to Doncaster. Taxpayer money should instead be used to improve transport in the municipalities of Manningham, Boroondara, Whitehorse and Banyule as well as to build the long-promised rail to Doncaster. This would ease congestion on the Eastern Freeway.

There are more effective and environmentally friendly transport solutions to address the problems of traffic congestion and trucks on residential streets than building a massive $16.5 billion toll road.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council calls on the Government to cancel the North East Link project, commence building a rail line to connect to Doncaster and invest more to improve public transport in the municipalities of Manningham, Boroondara, Whitehorse and Banyule.
