Legistrative Council E-Petitions

E-petition Number
Impose tax on single-use plastic packaging
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council the environmental disaster occurring worldwide relating to unsustainable wastage of single-use plastics. Across the world, plastics are one of the biggest threats to our oceans, with at least eight million tonnes ending up there every year. It has become a severe threat to marine life, a harmful contaminant in our seafood, and a contributor to climate change. Australian households contribute to this worldwide disaster, with one tonne of plastic thrown out every minute. Our non-stop consumption of plastic has become so excessive that almost every item we purchase is packaged in some kind of single-use plastic.

To avert this environmental crisis, we need to get plastic off our supermarket shelves. Victorians will support this because they fear that by 2050 the weight of ocean plastics will overtake the weight of fish. Fortunately, in November 2019, Victoria took its first step towards eliminating single-use plastics by banning single-use plastic shopping bags. However, the next step should be to introduce a further reduction in plastic packaging before the final step of completely banning single-use plastics.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to implement a state-wide tax on companies that package their products with single-use plastic and use the funds raised from the tax to improve recycling facilities.
