Preserve Public Open Space in Kilsyth
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council the amendment request to the Kilsyth Planning Scheme to rezone the surplus school site at 150 Cambridge Road, Kilsyth, to a neighbourhood residential zone, ready for sale and subsequent development.

If the amendment is allowed, the sale and subsequent development of the land for housing and related purposes would negatively impact a community that already has a deficiency of open space. A preliminary analysis of open space in Kilsyth by the Yarra Ranges Council has identified a shortfall. Government carelessness in allowing this planning scheme amendment will break the connection between open space deficiency and the solution and will cause a government owned public parkland open space resource to disappear.

150 Cambridge Road, Kilsyth needs to be preserved as it presents a rare opportunity for the Government to remedy the recreational parkland open space shortfall in the area and to provide a future recreational parkland to accommodate the outdoor needs of the growing population. The need for appropriate amounts of suitably sized and located parkland cannot be ignored as its importance to the health and wellbeing of future communities is beyond measure.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to consider the current shortage of public open space in Kilsyth, disallow the proposed amendment to the planning scheme at 150 Cambridge Road, and preserve this site for public parklands to accommodate local families interacting outdoors and significantly ease the pressures for new public parkland open space imposed by the growing population.
