Aerial shooting of koalas at Budj Bim National Park

Legislative Council 60 Parliament First Session
2256: Questions on Notice
GEORGIE PURCELL — To ask the Minister for Skills and TAFE (for the Minister for Environment):  In relation to the aerial shooting of koalas at Budj Bim National Park: How many koalas were detected in blue gum plantations within five kilometres of Budj Bim National Park since 1 June 2024, under the required authorisations for disturbing koalas.
Answer - 27 February 2026

The Conservation Regulator is responsible for the regulatory framework for minimising impacts on koalas from blue-gum harvesting operations.

The Conservation Regulator requires owners and managers of blue gum plantations who wish to undertake operations that may affect koalas to apply for an authorisation to disturb koalas under the Wildlife Act 1975.

Plantation owners or managers must also develop a Koala Management Plan that meets the minimum requirements set by the Conservation Regulator to minimise risks to koalas during operations.

The regulatory framework has clear requirements for the blue gum industry, including the use of koala spotters and the retention of nine live trees around any koala spotted during harvesting.
