2894: Questions on Notice
Tim Read to ask the Minister for Planning —  Regarding chimney one at the Hoffman Brickworks:
(1) Has the owner complied with the repair order issued by Heritage Victoria in January 2025 by submitting a report.
(2) Does the report indicate further make-safe works are required.
(3) Does the report describe what investigative works are needed to guide future repairs.
(4) When will Heritage Victoria order the owner to undertake make-safe and investigative works.
Answer - 28 October 2025

I would like the thank the Member for Brunswick for his question.

Heritage Victoria has advised that the owner has not yet complied with the repair order issued by Heritage Victoria in January 2025 because the submitted engineering report does not meet the repair order’s requirements.

I can advise you that make safe works have been achieved through the installation of netting to the upper portion of the chimney and the report does not indicate the need for further make safe works however, further site investigations must be undertaken before the report can be finalised.

Heritage Victoria considers these interim make-safe works are a suitable measure to protect the heritage fabric and values of the chimney until the repair works are undertaken and further specialist advice is being sought to ensure that any investigative works undertaken do not risk the heritage values of the chimney.

Public updates about the brickworks are available on the Heritage Victoria and Merri-Bek Council’s website.
