Question details
Question on Notice
With reference to mangroves along the eastern arm of Western Port:
(1) Is the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action tracking existing mangrove restoration projects; if so, please provide a list of these projects along with any relevant information.
(2) Does the Department audit the effectiveness of mangrove restoration projects; if not, what regulatory and/or legislative requirements would need to be met for the Department to audit projects.
(1) The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) has recently funded two mangrove restoration projects along the eastern shore of Western Port. The first is part of the Jam Jerrup Hybrid Coastal Protection and Revetment Project (Stage 2). This nature-based initiative integrates mangrove planting with the construction of a 140-metre rock revetment to stabilise the shoreline and reduce erosion. The second is an experimental mangrove restoration project led by the Western Port Seagrass Partnership, funded in 2023 through Coastcare Victoria. It involves the planting of 1,000 mangrove seedlings across a 2-hectare site near Grantville.
(2) All mangrove restoration projects funded by DEECA are required to submit progress and completion reports as a condition of funding. These reports detail project deliverables and outcomes. Additionally, any project involving revegetation, construction, or works on marine and coastal Crown land must obtain consent under the Marine and Coastal Management Act 2018 prior to commencement. These consents may include conditions such as monitoring and reporting on project effectiveness.
