Emergency services
Danny O’BRIEN (Gippsland South) (09:45): The Labor government does not know whether it is Arthur or Martha when it comes to funding for our emergency services. Two weeks ago at a Public Accounts and Estimates Committee hearing the government was asked to provide the budgets for our emergency services agencies. The minister said they could not be provided and we will have to wait until the annual reports are tabled next year. A departmental official said budgets had been set but the government was ‘not inclined to release them’. Last night, under pressure, the government has done just that, issuing a media release with a whole lot of figures that in the past we have been told to ignore because they are not right and each emergency agency’s budget changes throughout the year. All this tells us is that whatever Labor says about its big new emergency services tax and funding, it just cannot be believed.
