Montclaire aged care

James NEWBURY (Brighton) (09:44): The residents of Montclaire aged care in Brighton recently had a special visitor: Buttercup the cow. The visit certainly sparked the memories of many residents who as children had milked for fresh milk. Resident Hadyn, who grew up on a farm near Deniliquin, recalled:

When I was a child, I started to help milk the cows in the morning, it was just what you did growing up on a farm.

The visit was part of an event that included Dairy Australia. University of Melbourne researchers found that when the dairy consumption of aged care residents was increased from two to 3½ serves, there was an 11 per cent reduction in falls, a 33 per cent reduction in all fractures and a 46 per cent reduction in hip fractures. Thank you to Montclaire and especially to Buttercup for her forbearance in allowing me an attempt at milking.
