The petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that the Australian National Flag is the primary national symbol of the Commonwealth of Australia and represents all Australians. Many Victorians believe that government buildings, public institutions and official government events should consistently display the Australian National Flag as the principal official flag to promote national unity, civic identity and equal representation of all citizens. The petitioners consider that a clear and consistent policy on the display of the Australian National Flag across Victorian government departments, agencies and publicly funded institutions would provide greater consistency and reinforce its status as Australia's national flag.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to review its policies on the display of flags at Victorian government departments, agencies and publicly funded institutions, and to introduce a policy requiring the Australian National Flag to be prominently displayed as the principal official flag at government buildings, public institutions and official government events throughout Victoria.
