The petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that the streets of the major Coburg school precinct are dangerous for young people, with near misses commonplace.
We are a calling for a comprehensive safety review of streets surrounding Coburg schools including the intersections of Bell Street and Elm Grove, Elm Grove and Urquhart Street, Urquhart Street and Pentridge Boulevard and Bell Street and Sydney Road. These areas are a hotspot for foot and bike traffic for Coburg Primary School and Coburg High School students and young families travelling to and from the Coburg Children's Centre and the Maternal and Child Health nurse. Cars speed down bus lanes to avoid congestion, red lights are ignored, speeding is commonplace. Parents have had to actively pull children back from near misses, despite green pedestrian lights. We don't want to wait for a serious accident for action.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council to call on the Government to provide adequate funding for a comprehensive pedestrian safety review of the streets surrounding the major Coburg school precinct and action any necessary changes with urgency.
