Issue:
This petition of residents in Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Assembly that disabled public bathrooms are regularly being used by people without a disability. This misuse not only causes inconvenience and distress but also jeopardizes the dignity and respect that should be accorded to those with genuine needs. In Australia, disabled bathrooms have become susceptible to misuse and vandalism. They are often exploited by individuals who use them as changing rooms, for extended breaks, or even for vandalism. Such misuse creates unnecessary barriers for people with disability and countless others who rely on these facilities for daily comfort and necessary health needs. Data shows that in many public areas, up to 30% of incidents in disabled bathrooms involve unauthorized use and damages, further straining public resources and diminishing the accessibility for those who need it most. Locking these bathrooms with a universal disability access key system designed by Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia Limited (MLAK), providing eligible individuals with a key that gives them access to locked public disabled toilets statewide, could significantly reduce these incidents by ensuring only those with legitimate needs can access these spaces.
Action:
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Assembly implement an MLAK lock system to all disabled bathroom facilities across the state.
