Petition Increase investment in affordable housing and essential infrastructure

The petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that rapid population growth across many Victorian communities has significantly increased demand for affordable housing and essential infrastructure. While new housing developments continue to expand, supporting infrastructure, such as roads, public transport, schools, childcare services, hospitals, parks, community facilities, water, sewerage and other essential services, has not always kept pace with population growth. This places increasing pressure on existing communities, contributes to traffic congestion, reduces access to essential services and affects housing affordability and quality of life. The petitioners believe that housing growth should be accompanied by timely investment in the infrastructure necessary to support sustainable and liveable communities.

The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to increase investment in affordable housing and essential infrastructure, ensure infrastructure planning and funding keep pace with population growth, prioritise high-growth communities for infrastructure delivery, require coordinated planning between housing and infrastructure projects, and publish annual public reports on housing delivery, infrastructure investment and progress in meeting the needs of Victoria's growing population.
