The petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council to the serious problem that is plaguing this State and in fact, nearly all of Australia, speed limits. Speed limits are important, but not when they are a hinderance. We have freeways throughout Victoria that vary from 80 kilometres per hour to 110 kilometres per hour which is ridiculous.
Freeways are built to be the main arteries of a country and we can't slow the flow of these arteries without problems. They should be one speed.
If the roads are made 'safe', then why can't we go a reasonable speed so that we can get to our destinations within a reasonable amount of time. The logic that is being applied to our roads in Victoria is very minimal. Driveways and minor dirt roads are allowed to directly enter freeways causing unnecessary speed reductions. If a few simple slip roads were put in place at the points that minor roads join directly onto the freeway it would nullify the need for the 80 kilometres per hour sections.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to increase the speed limit on all Victorian freeways to 130 kilometre per hour and give minor roads that enter the freeway slip roads.
