The petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that Bairnsdale Neighbourhood House has long been a cornerstone of the community. It helps local residents in need of food support and social inclusion and combats isolation by offering a community cafe and other activities. During the 2019/2020 bushfires, Bairnsdale Neighbourhood House delivered two tonnes of food daily, for 17 days, to a cut-off community and continued support for weeks after. Its services are invaluable within the community and indispensable during an emergency. Unfortunately, the facility has suffered significant deterioration and is no longer fit for purpose.
Bairnsdale Neighbourhood House now requires urgent rebuilding efforts to continue its invaluable work. It is imperative that we step up and prioritise the rebuilding of such an important community hub to ensure that these services are not lost. With a rebuilt and revitalised Bairnsdale Neighbourhood House, it is expected there will be a direct positive impact not only in the lives of its participants and volunteers but also on the broader community. Strengthening the Bairnsdale Neighbourhood House strengthens East Gippsland.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to fund the necessary resources for the reconstruction of Bairnsdale Neighbourhood House, which will allow the expansion of its current services and accommodate for the future.
