The petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council the allegations of sexual assault against children at a number of childcare centres across Melbourne. Concerned parents and citizens urge the Department of Education to strengthen child safety in Victoria’s childcare centres.
We propose four measures to enhance oversight and protection. Mandated CCTV installation in public areas, compliant with privacy laws, to deter misconduct and provide evidence. Annual psychological evaluations for educators, plus voluntary counselling and stress management training, to ensure their wellbeing. Random inspections conducted by independent teams, under the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority oversight, to verify compliance with safety standards. Implementation of regular mental health screenings for children with educators trained to identify distress and refer to specialists. These measures aim to prevent future incidents, restore public trust, and ensure safe environments for children.
We request policy reviews, updates on actions, and opportunities to collaborate. Please act swiftly to protect our most vulnerable.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to strengthen child safety in Victoria’s childcare centres by mandating CCTV cameras in public areas, requiring annual mental health assessments for educators, conducting random independent inspections to ensure safety compliance and conducting regular child mental health screenings to prevent future incidents and restore public trust.
