The petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council the need to ban the use of polystyrene boxes. Polystyrene boxes used by fruit and vegetable wholesalers and supermarkets break down and pollute our waterways. These microplastics are toxic to the wildlife that live along rivers and wetlands. Waxed boxes would be a more sustainable option. The food industry needs to take responsibility for the damage they have caused to the environment and clean up the toxic polystyrene that is breaking down in rivers and waterways in Melbourne.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to ban polystyrene boxes and require a clean up of the rivers and waterways of polystyrene and rubbish to be conducted by the food industry.
