Issue:
This petition of residents in Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Assembly Altona North has experienced significant population growth, yet despite a metropolitan train line running directly through the suburb, there is no train station servicing the area. This has created a major gap in train service coverage between neighbouring stations, leaving a large residential community without rail access. Residents must rely on unreliable bus services that are heavily affected by peak-hour traffic. These services are also not disability-friendly, with many bus stops lacking seating or basic accessibility infrastructure. The closest train station is Newport Station, where parking is limited, stressful, and often unavailable, placing ongoing pressure on that station and surrounding streets. From door to door commuting to the CBD currently takes 1 hour to travel to work and up to one and a 1 hour 30 min to return home, resulting in more than 7.6 hours a week commuting when attending the office three days per week. The absence of a train station in Altona North negatively impacts accessibility, reliability of public transport, and residents’ quality of life.
Action:
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Assembly Commit to the planning and reopening of a train station in Altona North, utilising the existing rail line that passes through the suburb, in order to address the current gap in train service coverage. This would provide reliable, accessible public transport for residents, significantly reduce commuting times, relieve congestion at Newport Station, and better support the growing population of Altona North and surrounding communities.
