The petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council the rising street violence in Melbourne. We need full CCTV coverage across main streets and laneways in Melbourne, with all cameras actively monitored. We need to increase visible police patrols and have them operate at least 18 hours each day across high-risk public areas.
A transparent, public reporting system or application needs to be established to alert residents and visitors to dangerous or high-risk zones. We need to review and strenghten the management of the homeless to prevent unsafe behaviour spilling onto the streets. We need to create a government-backed victim support fund to provide financial and psychological assistance to individuals affected by random or racially motivated assaults within Melbourne's CBD.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to address the rising street violence in Melbourne by improving CCTV coverage across the city, increasing police patrols in high-risk public areas, implementing a public reporting system that alerts the public to dangerous or high-risk zones, strenghtening the management of the homeless and creating a government-backed victim support fund to provide assistance to individuals affected by random or racially motivated assaults within Melbourne.
