Celebrating National Week of Deaf People

From 20-26 September the Victorian Parliament is celebrating the National Week of Deaf People.

The week-long celebration of Deaf individuals and the Australian Deaf community is a great opportunity to acknowledge the Australian Deaf community’s history, culture, language and achievements.

The 2021 theme is ‘Celebrating Thriving Deaf Communities’. The Victorian Parliament is observing the theme by broadly promoting inclusion for Victoria’s Deaf community within spaces at Parliament.

Some activities we’re engaging in during the week are:

  • introducing our Auslan parliamentary vocabulary developed by our Auslan parliamentary group
  • hosting a Parliament presents webinar on 23 September, the International Day of Sign Languages. Go to: https://fb.me/e/TSZ13VKW
  • hosting an online workshop on Auslan and Deaf culture for our parliamentary staff, led by our Auslan youth group to increase awareness and to build capacity.
